Finish the Golf Course With One Club

An experienced golf player will tell you that your most useful (and therefore most valuable) golf club is the seven iron. Many refer to the seven iron as "the perfect club". If you've seen the movie "Tin Cup", you'll know why this is so. Kevin Costner's character uses it for several shots, including putting. Here are some ways you can use this club and why it is called the perfect club.

It's possible to make par on most golf courses with nothing more than a seven iron and a putter. Depending on your strength, you can use the seven iron to shoot your ball anywhere between 170 and 225 yards. For distances upwards of that the seven iron is not recommended but some golf courses don't have distances further than 200 yards.

Here is how to shoot par using the seven iron on long holes. As long as your shot is less than 200 yards use the seven iron for the drive. Now use the same club for your approach shot. You'll either want to take a full swing or cut your swing depending on the distance to the hole. Also depending on the distance needed, you'll want to place your ball in front of your stance or behind. In front for shorter distances that require more control and behind for shots that require loft.

If your ball isn't already on the green at this point, you can use the seven iron to chip the ball and get it onto the green. To chip the ball with this club, close the stance and hit the ball in the back of your stance. Make sure you cut your swing so you don't overshoot the green. After your ball is on the green the seven iron's job is done. This club is rarely used as a putter even though Kevin Costner did it with Hollywood's help.

On shorter, par three holes, the "perfect" seven iron can be used. Again use your stance to put more power behind your swing. If loft and shorter distance is required then stand in front of the ball (which may seem awkward) and cut your swing. Again, once your ball is on the green use a putter to finish your hole.

Now you can see why the seven iron is so useful and referred to as the perfect club. With the right stance and golf swing you can use it almost anywhere and on any course. Try it out on the driving range and see for yourself.

How to Maximize Your Toddler's Learning

Giving your child more opportunity to satisfy his curiosity and to learn will make him easier to live with. You can maximize your toddler's learning by giving him challenging and fascinating learning materials to play with and sufficient opportunities to exercise her exploding interest in language. In doing so, he will not be as likely to empty the wastebasket into the goldfish bowl, crayon the walls or flush socks down the toilet. In addition, the more stimuli your child can give her brain through listening, looking, smelling, tasting and touching, the more intelligent he will become.

1 - You will soon discover that your toddler's giving you lots of useful clues to what his growing brain needs. It is not necessary for you to impose learning on him or try to teach him facts by rote. You don't have to force him to sit still to learn or even program ahead of time what he should be learning. Your job, essentially, is to make sure that he has the opportunity and encouragement to teach himself.

2 - You can help maximize your toddler's learning shortly after his first birthday by enlarging the environment in which he is permitted to play freely and safely. You can even start teaching him how to handle possible hazards such as how to go down an adult bed safely by sliding off, feet first, so that he can be allowed more freedom.

3 - When it's warm and dry outside, you can fence off a sizable portion of your yard, ensure that it contains no hazards, and allow your toddler to explore freely. Or take him to the nearest park and let him roam. It is a must that you watch him closely until he has outgrown the habit of putting anything interesting and new into his mouth.

4 - To help make more freedom possible, you need to teach your toddler the meaning of "no." On the other hand, it is also important that you do not say "no" too often or too harshly, or your toddler may get the idea that you love him better when he isn't trying to learn and explore.

5 - There is no need for you to resort to slapping his hands or spanking him to teach him to respect the rights and property of others. Slapping hands to discourage active exploration normally teaches a child to slap back and hit other smaller children. Spanking carries a feeling of humiliation that isn't necessary in helping youngsters learn to behave properly. Spanking should be used rarely. And if you do, you give him a hug after wards. This method compels him to pay attention to you and lets him know that you mean what you are saying, but it avoids the idea of punishment.

Before You Hit That Golf Shot, Think!

Recently I played with three other players who should have shot at least four strokes better than they did. And that was only for nine holes. The only reason was, that they weren't thinking.

First hole, reed-lined water hazard on the right. Player A hits his ball off the tee into the reeds, but it's playable. He takes out a 7-iron and gives the ball a whack. The ball shoots out, across the fairway, and into a field that borders the course. Which is out of bounds. For his next shot, he chips out into the fairway with a wedge. Why didn't he do that the first time?

First hole, Player B hits his second shot into the same water hazard. He is about to drop his ball one club-length outside the hazard, which he's allowed to do, and asks me if this is correct. I say, Yes, but dropping there would give him an ugly lie, so I mention that he can also drop the ball back as far as he wants on a line connecting the pin and the ball's point of entry into the hazard. Back into the fairway if he wants. So he drops a little further back, but still in the rough, and skanks his next shot.

Second hole, player C is about 100 yards from the green, in the left side rough, with a tree about a dozen yards in front of him. He takes out his wedge (after all, it's only a hundred yards) and hits the ball. Right up into the tree. It caroms straight down to the ground. Why not punch an 8-iron under the tree?

And on it went. Now, these players weren't that bad, they could hit the ball fairly well and were all right around the greens. But not using their head cost them strokes they didn't need to take.

Here's how to do it right. On the final hole, a par 5, I was in the fairway, 240 yards from the green, which is about thirty feet above the fairway. In my wildest dreams I can't hit the green. Nor do I want to go for all the distance I can and end up pitching onto the green from an uphill lie. What to do? How about hit a 7-iron to a place where the fairway is still level, and a wedge onto the green?

The point here is, that you have different shots in your skill set. Use them to get the ball into the hole in the easiest and most certain way possible. No one ever said if you're 200 yards from the green that you have to pull out your 200 yard club. Not if playing short and chipping on gives you a much better chance of getting the lowest score you can.

Before you hit that golf shot, think! There might be a better way to do it.
