1) Work on the Lag Putts Before the Round- Right before you go to the tee, spend 10 or 15 minutes putting. Keep in mind the putts that are really going to make or break your round are the lag putts. Really concentrate on "dialing in" the distance. You want to have two putts all day, with tap ins for the second put.

2) Use Your Favorite Club Off the Tee- Face the facts. If you can't hit the driver and keep it in play off the tee, then don't use it! Use the club you can hit the longest, yet still keep it in play. Getting off the tee and keeping it in play is the most important part of playing a good round.

3) Play Your Own Game- This is closely related to the last tip. Play your own style of golf. Don't worry about how others are playing the hole- what they are hitting off the tee, what club into the green, or what kind of short shot or putt. Only you know your strengths and confidence in certain shots. Try to play the best you can, not like someone else.

4) Play to Your Strengths- You know your strengths, play to them. Try to put your ball in positions that allow you to use your strengths on every hole. This is different for everyone, but just having this thought is a game changer. Do you draw the ball? Make sure you are coming in from the correct side of the fairway. Are you good at the 150 yard shot? Lay up to that distance, etc...

5) Swing Easy Into the Wind- Swing smooth and easy when hitting into the wind. You'll put less spin on the ball and hit it straighter. Realize you'll have to hit more club and rely on the short game to get you a par or bogey.

6) Minimize the Damage- Don't try that "one in a million" shot when you can play the ball away from the hole and guarantee a par or bogey. Knowing when to back off can save you 2 or 3 strokes on one hole. That's the difference between a 77 and an 80.

7) Lay Up- If you can make the water, fine, take the chance. But you know when to suck it up and lay up! "There are no pictures on score cards" as they say, and the taunting of your playing buddies will be a thing of the past when you shoot a 76.

8) Play the Shot You Have that Day- Don't fight the shot you are playing on the day of your round. If you can't seem to stop hitting the draw, then just aim right. Same with the slice. Don't struggle against the shots you keep playing. Use them to your advantage. You now know where the shot is going to end up!

9) Stick to a Routine- Having a routine before every shot will help you in those pressure shots coming down the stretch. Stick to a precise routine and you'll keep your mind off the consequences of every shot.

It's been said that golf shafts are the "engine" of the golf club. When I think of updating my golf equipment each spring, I don't think about buying new golf clubs until I've evaluated my shafts. Let me show you why placing a premium on your golf shafts can pay big dividends.

First, let me pose a general question only to make a point. What is the only thing between your hands and the club head? The answer is obviously the golf shaft -- 46 inches of high end technology. That same technology has a huge influence on how your shots are shaped and how far the ball will ultimately travel. For example, instead of hitting a 240 yard, slight unwanted fade with a shaft that has a wrong kick point. Using a premium shaft with the right kick point might result in a 260 yard slight draw!

Wooden Toys For Little Girls

Little girls are treasures. I enjoy watching them play in their own little pretend world and think back to the days when I did that and also when my daughter was in that "little world". There are many toys in the market today for little girls to play with. I have a few favorites that I think are essential for little girls.

Little girls love to cook. What better way to introduce them to cooking then to give them their own little kitchen. I like wooden kitchen play sets best as the durability is so much better. Many wooden play sets include a wooden kitchen cupboard, wooden stove and wooden refrigerator. These are what I call the basic wooden kitchen sets. There are also a few "extras" which include a wooden dishwasher and wooden microwave. Another needed item for a kitchen is a wooden table and chairs. A wooden table and chairs is a very versatile toy that is well worth the money. Children can practice table manners while playing and also perhaps use it when coloring, playing with puzzles or many other activities.

All little girls love their babies and love to "mother" them. A little girl will feel much better if she knows her little baby is well cared for. A wooden doll crib, cradle or bunk bed will be a wooden toy that she will cherish. There are many styles of cribs and cradles. There are some that are stained while some are left unfinished. There are even some swinging doll cradles that look so very realistic. Some doll cribs come with a pillow and a delightful cozy comforter set. I especially like the wooden bunk beds set as many little girls have more than one doll that will need a good night's sleep.

Another wooden toy that little girls will love is a wooden doll swing. This wooden doll swing is hard to find but is designed like an outside yard swing. Little girls will love to swing their dolls on this old fashioned wooden doll swing. The wooden doll swings that I like best are made of a hard wood and have chains that are adjustable to lengthen or shorten the wooden seat.

Little girls are not just all about dolls. There are many little girls that love their dolls but also love to run and pretend in another world as well. Wooden stick horses are an excellent choice for little girls as well. Perhaps she has a dream of becoming a barrel racer! There are many types of stick horses. Some are made of wood, others are fabrics. Some wooden stick horses even come in a kit form so that she can custom design her own wooden stick horse. Other stick horses are constructed of soft poly fleece fabrics that are soft to the touch. They come in a variety of colors. Black, brown, gray, white are some of the colors and then there are the carousal type of stick horses that are full of colors.....even a bright colored blue with a brightly colored mane from yarn.

By giving your little girl a wooden toy, you are giving her a toy that will have durability and perhaps even your grandchild will enjoy playing with. No, you will not have to buy batteries but you will enjoy watching your little girl's creativity and imagination as she grows and matures into a young lady.

William Shakespeare's famous lines written for the play Romeo and Juliet "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet". The Names of Roses are anything but plain and ordinary. The beauty of a rose is one that the eye never tires of and the name of a rose always stays the same.

From the family Rosaceae, the rose is considered a perennial shrub or vine and contains over one hundred species and the colors range from white to black. The varieties range from miniature roses to large bushes and usually sharp prickles called thorns. The name rose originates back to the Old Persian period and slightly deviated over time through different eras of Greek, Latin and French.

Miniature roses for the color white could be Angelita, Popcorn or Whiteout while tall could be Madame Hardy, Prairie Star or White Maman Cochet. The color orange brings into play Bambino for the miniature class, Sunset Boulevard or Sunbonnet Hue for the Tall roses. The purple category is quite large of which you can find names of Lavendaer Dream, Purple Passion or Tuscany Rose.

For the all important color red, the Names of Roses to look for could be Amore, Red Corvette, Hope for Humanity or believe or not even Super Hero. There is even a green colored rose called Supergreen and black roses have names such as Black Beauty, Black Cherry and Black Magic.

Some of the more fascinating roses are the ones that are multi-colored. The names that are given to some of this variety are: Bella, Hocus Pocus, Luxor and Marmelade. How more exciting can it be to propagate your own type and name the new whatever you wish!

The list of names of roses is quite a long list due to the categories involved such as color, size, type of blossoms, and zones. You can either search the internet, check out your neighbors yards or what you might see as you are driving through a local neighbor hood. Better yet, take some time and browse through your local nursery and you will find an amazing selection of roses that have some beautiful names.

5 Things to Do With a Toddler When the Weather is Bad

There are usually lots of things to do with a toddler when the weather outside is nice - go for a walk, go to the park, play in the yard and so on.

But what about those days when it is pouring rain, or in the middle of a winter cold-spell, or during a summer heat wave? What then?

Here are 5 great ideas for things to do with a toddler when you just can't be outside.

Number 1 - Visit the public library - and not to read books. Take your toddler to the library. Many libraries in cities across North America have 'kids' play and explore areas. For example, in our city - most of the Hamilton Public Library locations have an area where your toddler can play until they get tuckered out. They have a miniature train set up for playing, a puppet stage for those aspiring actors, puzzles galore. Its FREE and a great way to spend an active hour with your child.

Number 2 - Visit a child museum. I was amazed how many fun and interesting things there are to see and do at a children's museum. And you may be pleasantly surprised to find out that there is one in your city or a nearby city. Just go on-line and in your favourite search engine like Google or Yahoo type in children museum.

The children museum in our city has big blocks to play with, musical instruments to experiment with, a paint room with aprons (it still will be messy - but so what it's fun), rocks with fossils to feel and see, fish tanks, colouring stations, and a whole bunch more. It may not be free in your city but it will not cost very much. Check it out for great fun with your child.

Number 3 - Visit a business supply store like Staples or a big box store like Costco or Sam's Club. I know you must be thinking how much fun can that be. Most of our kids like to ride in a shopping cart. So when it's not so nice outside I head off to one of these stores and put my guy in the cart and we can spend up to an hour walking the aisles. We stop to pick up something colourful - like a pad of coloured sticky notes. We feel them, we smell them and then we put them back. A bit unusual but still loads of fun!

Number 4 - Go grocery shopping. The trick here is that this is not the time to buy a long list of groceries - just buy a few things. This is an outing for focusing on your baby and experiencing all the things in the store. Pop your toddler in the shopping cart and look at the GREEN peppers, the RED peppers, hold a box of Kleenex, shake a box of macaroni, feel the roughness of a kiwi, and so on.

Number 5 - Visit a restaurant for a snack. One of my favourite things to do is to visit a coffee shop or even a McDonald's for a snack. This outing will work at any restaurant that has a high chair and sells somewhat healthy food - such as a muffin. We do this once a week - go to one of the other outings mentioned above and then head to a Williams Coffee Shop of a McDonald's. I order a muffin for sharing, a glass of ice water for sipping and a coffee for me. I put my guy in a high chair, and we enjoy sharing the muffin and let him practice sipping water out of a glass - no sippy cups here - slurping the water down his shirt is part of the fun.

There is usually lots of people to look at, music playing in the background and great company sharing a snack with each other. It can't be any better than this - food, fun and great company.

These are 5 ideas that work for us. Use this as a starting point and create your own adventures with your child - even when it's not so nice outside.

Many kids enjoy playing sports and being active to get all of their energy out after having so sit all day at school. Boys particularly love to do this, but many girls find out they love sports as well once they are actually exposed to them and encouraged to play. That is why I encourage parents of any gender of children to take them out in the back yard or to the local park to get a feel for what kind of games they like to play. Try to play football with them, along with soccer, baseball, tennis, basketball, you name it - try to play it.

Not only will this help them find something they like to do, but it is also a great form of exercise and a venue to get energy out. If you try playing sports with your children and they just don't like it after trying it a few times, introduce them to something a bit more mellow such as reading, drawing, or learning on the computer. Maybe your child prefers to be more of an individual activity type of person. If this is so, allow them to occupy themselves with the above said activities, but let them know that you are always there for them if they would like to have some company.

Cheap and Easy Things to Do Over Winter Break That the Kids Will Love

Don't fret over winter break- there are so many fun things to do with the kids. You don't have to spend a lot of money or travel very far to make the most out of winter.

Here is a list of fun things to do over winter break that are cheap and easy to do:

Ice Skating on a lake or pond.

Sledding down a hill.

Catch snowflakes on your tongue.

Sip hot chocolate while looking at the stars.

Put bird feeders in the yard and keep them filled. Enjoy watching the birds come to feed.

Go for a walk through town to admire Christmas lights and decorations.

Gather friends and go singing Christmas Carols door to door.

Have a good old fashioned snowball fight.

Volunteer at your local food pantry or soup kitchen.

Make a snow fort.

Walk around through town and look at the stores dressed up for Christmas.

Put antlers or a Santa Claus hat on your dog or cat and take a holiday picture.

Donate old bedding and blankets to the local animal shelter.

Go for a walk in the forest and admire the fallen snow on the trees.

Take a whole afternoon to go cross country skiing- this is great exercise.

Go downhill skiing.

Play touch football in the snow.

Read Christmas stories by the fireplace.

Watch Christmas classics on TV like The Grinch and Charlie Brown.

Make snow angels on a hill. Add some branches and food coloring to make them pretty.
